Lan Fan
Lan Fan was by far my favorite character from Fullmetal Alchemist; I adore her headstrong nature, as well as her determined devotion and loyalty. I had never used Worbla to this extent, or made armor that required more complicated patterning, but it was well worth the challenge!
My Automail was made from EVA foam and Worbla. I made a pattern using manila folders, transferred the pattern to the foam and Worbla, cut out all the pieces and assembled them like a giant puzzle. The Worbla was used primarily on the hand and fingers, and I primed it with wood glue. The foam was primed with Plastidip. Everything was painted with Rustoleum Metallic spray paint in Titanium. It all attached to a silver spandex sleeve via Velcro and elastic.
The wig was a Jeannie from Arda Wigs. I stubbed the base wig and styled the bangs. For the odango, I hollowed out a styrofoam ball, scavenged wefts from the clip-on ponytail that came with the Jeannie, glued the ends of the wefts into the inside of the styrofoam ball, then wrapped the wefts around the ball, using a heat gun on low and hairspray to hold the fibers in place.
I made the breastplate using upholstery vinyl which covered a craft foam base.
For the mask, I bought a stage mask from JoAnns, then cut the eye holes and mouth to be the appropriate shape for Lan Fan’s mask. I used Model Magic to sculpt the flat nose and forehead, then covered all of that with paper mache and Mod Podge. Then I painted the whole thing with acrylics.
